Tesla’s customization features use a handful of names that are easy to mix up. Here is what each term means, in plain English, and where to find it.

Toybox

The fun-features menu on the Tesla touchscreen. It holds features such as Light Show, Boombox (including custom lock sounds) and Paint Shop. If you can’t find a feature, start here.

Paint Shop

The Toybox app that changes how your car looks on the screen and in the Tesla app: Tesla paint colors and, on supported software, your own wraps and license plate images. It does not change the real car. Full walkthrough: Tesla Paint Shop guide.

Wraps (the tab)

The Paint Shop tab where custom wrap images appear once you’ve loaded them. Path in the car: Toybox → Paint Shop → Wraps.

Custom wrap, skin, livery

Different names for the same thing in Paint Shop: a PNG image that is painted onto the 3D car model. In a body shop, “wrap” usually means real vinyl film instead; see Paint Shop wrap vs vinyl wrap.

Creations

The section of the Tesla app, version 4.59.0 or later, where you upload a wrap from your phone: Creations → Wrap → Upload. Guide: upload a wrap from the Tesla app.

Wraps folder (USB)

A folder named exactly Wraps at the root of a USB drive. The car reads PNG wraps from it. The drive must be exFAT, FAT32 / MS-DOS FAT, ext3 or ext4, not NTFS.

LicensePlate folder (USB)

The equivalent folder for license plate images, used from Paint Shop → Customize → License Plate on supported software. Make one with the free plate generator.

Template, UV map

A template is Tesla’s official layout image for one model: the car’s panels unfolded flat, also called a UV map. Your wrap has to follow it, which is why a Model Y design does not fit a Model 3. Tesla publishes them in its custom-wraps repository; most are 1024×1024 and Cybertruck is 1024×768.

The 1 MB limit

The largest file size Paint Shop accepts for a wrap PNG. All the file rules are in Tesla Paint Shop file requirements, and the PNG checker tests them for you.

Juniper, Highland

Nicknames for the refreshed Model Y (2025+) and Model 3 (2024+). They have their own Paint Shop templates, separate from earlier cars. Browse designs for the Model Y Juniper and the Model 3 Highland.
