Tesla Paint Shop Wrap vs Vinyl Wrap: What’s the Difference?

A Paint Shop wrap changes how your Tesla looks on its screen and in the app; a vinyl wrap changes the real car. Compare cost, time, reversibility and how to use one to plan the other.

“Tesla wrap” now means two different things. Since Tesla added custom wraps to Paint Shop, many owners re-skin the car on the screen without touching the paint. Others mean a vinyl wrap: film applied to the real body by a shop. Here’s how they compare, and how to use the free one to plan the expensive one.

What a Paint Shop wrap is

Paint Shop lives in Toybox on supported Tesla software. Besides Tesla’s own colors, it can load your own wrap images: PNG files laid out on Tesla’s official template for your model. Load them from the Tesla app (Creations → Wrap → Upload, app 4.59.0 or later) or from a Wraps folder on a USB drive. The Paint Shop guide covers every step, and the file requirements list the rules a PNG must pass.

It is cosmetic and reversible: nothing about the real car changes, and you can switch looks as often as you like.

What a vinyl wrap is

A vinyl wrap is adhesive film applied over the paint by a trained installer. It changes the real color or finish, can protect the paint underneath and can be removed later. Price, durability and warranty depend on the film, the shop and the car, so get a written quote and ask to see Tesla work the shop has done.

Use the digital wrap to plan the real one

The two work well together. Before you pay for vinyl, try the look on the screen:

  1. Open the wrap editor for your exact model and try colors, stripes or a full livery on the 3D car.
  2. Export the PNG, load it in Paint Shop and live with it for a week.
  3. Show the shop your 3D preview so they can see what you want.

Keep in mind that a Paint Shop file is a small screen texture. It shows the idea, not a print file; the shop will measure your car and prepare its own artwork.
